The Foundation Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) encourages leading scientists by actively promoting information and knowledge exchange across their traditional professional boudaries. ATI was established in June, 1993 with official approval from MEXT.

Prior to ATI’s official establishment, our activities began on an informal basis dating back to 1986. Since the very beginning our consistent focus has been to promote the development of nano science and technology. The term “nano technology” was not popular at that time. But now it has become a global theme. Symbolically speaking, we started our journey in a narrow stream, and now find ourselves in the midst of a big river.

A big difficulty is expected in coming fiscal year 2009. It comes from the world-wide economic shrinkage and we must reduce our supporting program. However, the Research Committees Program, the central activities in the Foundation, will be promoting widely and the outline of 6 Committees is shown in the text. You will find sharp and wide themes from basic, life and engineering sciences.
We hope that you find this a fresh and exciting initiative to open nano science and technology possibilities for the future.
